Discovering God In The Time Of Crises – Part 2

Crises time as in every situation in life comes with challenges and opportunities. One opporturnity crises offers us is to discover something new.

If we don’t face crises, we may not discover and harness hidden potentials and resources. One discovery we could make in crises is to know who God really is.

The Bibel uses images and attributes to describe God. It says that God is: Father, King, Consuming Fire, Jugde, Husband, Shepherd, Landowner, Lion, Lamb, Strong Tower, etc.

According to Psalm 18,2, we have other predicates with which God is described. When we receive this revelation, our faith in God will be strengthend despite the crises we may face.

The Description Of God (Ps 18,2)

God Is Shield: The imagery of God as our Shield is in the category of protection during warfare. The purpose of the shield is to protect someone from the enemies attack. Shield belongs to instruments of war.

Closely related to this will be banner: The Lord is my Banner “ JWHW Nissi (Ex 17,15-16). Till date, soldiers fight under a banner or flag. A banner or flag can play the role of protection during warfare. Warring parties know that anyone under this flag or banner belongs to the regiment of such army.

God as our Shield means that his banner of protection is waving over us. The enemies know exactly under whose flag or banner we move. The Lord gives his people covering. “He shall cover you with His feathers” (Ps 91,4). Abraham received God’s protection. “Do not be afraid Abram. I am your shield” (Gen 15,1). Those who fear God have received a banner (Ps 60,6).

God Is Horn Of Salvation: Horn is the symbol of power and might. So God is the driving force and architect of our salvation. He gives us boldness and security.

In Revelation 5,6 we see the Lamb of God described as “having seven horns” which is a symbol of unlimited power and might.

As much as the salvation of our soul and our social existence is concerned, nothing can threaten us because God is behind us. We have the conquering Saviour on our side. Our salvation is anchored in God’s power. We are so safe that nothing can hurt us. Not even a hair of our head can drop without God being aware He has full detail about us (Matthew 10,30; Lk 21,18).

God Is Stronghold (Rom 8,31; Joshua 5,13-15): The Psalmist says that God is our stronghold. A stronghold is an extremely fortified structure. Oxford Dictionary says, “a stronghold is a place where there is much support for a cause”.

The purpose of erecting a stronghold is to provide absolute support and high security against enemies attack. A stronghold is an undefeatable place. It can’t be taken!

God, as our Stronghold means He provides us with full support and security that cannot be broken. God is ultimate in Power. He created the powers that be and therefore is not subject to elements of power and its agents (Phil 2,9-11; Mt 28,18).

He has overthrown Satan (Mt 12,43; Col 2,14-15): We have become the apple of his eyes “…for he who touches you touches the apple of His eye” (Zech 2,8 compare Deut 32,10).

God is our Stronghold: We are securely kept and out of reach to harm because we are living in a fortified city surrendered by the protection and providence of God. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rom 8,31). Let us receive a revelation of this dimension of God’s presence in our journey of faith (Josh 5,13ff).

What Do You Think?

We have all sinned and deserve God’s judgment. God, the Father, sent His only Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. Jesus, the creator and eternal Son of God, who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Bible.
